Educational Placement

Very often, residents remain at the group home during the school day without an educational placement. Sometimes these residents are not placed in schools for extended periods of time while an appropriate educational placement is determined.

Such practices impose a considerable burden on the staffing needs of a group home. When large numbers of students remain inside the group home during the day, additional staff resources are required. Typically, staffing needs during the day should be at their lowest. More importantly, the resident does not receive optimal educational program support.

Understanding how to assist in the proper placement of a resident in an appropriate school is one of the benefits that the Consortium will offer.

Often, assisting in the educational placement merely requires contacting a child advocate (or offering support in having an advocate appointed), who can effectively utilize available laws to have appropriate services provided.

The Consortium will assist and support group homes in understanding and following procedures that will result in appropriate private placement through the support of the Focus Point School and Meadow Brook Education Center Programs.
