Our Expertise

We anticipate that, at our opening, we will begin with a relatively small staff. But although we may have a small quantity of staff members, our clients will receive the care they deserve due to the high quality of the services we will provide.

Our lead psychiatrist, Dr. David Hackney, has over 20 years of experience in providing mental health services in the Washington, D.C. metro area. For 15 of those years, he has focused on working with members of at-risk populations at all levels – children, adults, and families. Dr. Hackney received his B.A. from Harvard University and his M.D. from Mt. Sinai School of Medicine in New York. He completed his psychiatric residency training at St. Elizabeths Hospital in Washington, D.C.

Koba will also draw on its many years of providing group home care, including mental health services, for at-risk teenagers in the Mansion at Focus Point. You can find details of the services that the Mansion offers here or here.

Past Experience
Finally, our past experience with delivering mental health services encompasses projects that we undertook as part of contracts with the government of the District of Columbia. Two of those projects are described here.

Research and development of recommendations for the D.C. Forensic Mental Health System. Koba assembled a staff of expert professionals to create a series of reports on reorganizing the D.C. forensic mental health system, covering such fields as youth services and juvenile forensics. The staff also submitted a final report and notation of findings to senior administrators from the federal and D.C. governments.

Mental health treatment for committed and detained youth at the former Oak Hill Youth Center. Koba’s team of four clinical psychologists and a psychiatrist provided full-time mental health services to youth between the ages of 13 and 18. These services included: crisis intervention; individual, group, and family therapy; psychological evaluations; psychiatric screening; lock-down visitations; drug counseling; and staff training and support. Koba also recruited and trained additional staff to provide 24-hour on-call emergency psychiatric services.
